When using raw bar soap, work it up in your hands to make sure there are no whole particles of tree bark or pods in the bar (leftover charcoal from the the plantain skins that didn't quite burn down all the way) that can scratch or tear skin, instead of rubbing the soap on your skin directly use a rag, sponge, loofah, washcloth etc. It melts away when lathered with water.

To prevent it from spoiling due to humidity, black soap must be stored in a sealed plastic bag or dry container.
